2018 Amazing Shake Winners Announced
With 14 Transformation Zone scholars competing as finalists in the Amazing Shake competition, Dr. T. Lamar Goree on Sunday announced Eden Holmes, Omaria Sparks and Rylen Guice as the 2018 Caddo Schools Amazing Shake winners.
The 14 finalists were asked to write and deliver a speech as if they were President of the United States while standing in the nation's capital. The speech was designed to allow students to formulate their priority list for the nation while also outlining solutions.
Holmes of Woodlawn Leadership Academy took home the top honors in the high school category while Sparks and Guice of Queensborough Elementary and Westwood Elementary respectively won the judges' praise as winners in the elementary/middle division. The announcement was made by Dr. Goree on the steps of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. The 14 finalists spend four days in in Washington, D.C. studying civics and history while honning their speaking skills.
Founded in 2014 in Caddo Parish, the Amazing Shake program is designed to teach "tie-breaker" skills to students within the Transformation Zone. Each year the 14 campuses compete in a series of events including working a room of lawyers, delivering speeches from the anchor desk at KSLA and even serving community members at a dinner.
Both Guice and Sparks will go on to compete at the National Amazing Shake competition in February 2019 in Atlanta at the Ron Clark Academy. Holmes will spend the 2018-2019 school year as the top student speaker for the district.
