Louisiana offers several alternative routes to teacher certification for candidates who have earned a bachelor’s degree but have not completed a teacher preparation program. The available pathways to licensure are based on the candidate’s education and the subjects a candidate wishes to teach.
One of the following:
Praxis® Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) — comprehensive assessments that measure the skills and content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs
ACT of 22+ / SAT of 1100+ – An ACT composite score of 22 or an SAT combined verbal and math score of 1100 or higher (New SAT) or 1030 or higher (pre-March 2016 SAT) may be used in lieu of Praxis 1 PPST Exams or Core Academic Skills for Educators in reading, writing and math by prospective teachers in Louisiana.
Master’s Degree – Alternate-route candidates admitted to a Louisiana alternative teacher education program with an earned master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution may be exempt from the Praxis I PPST Exams or Core Academic Skills for Educators admission requirement.
Praxis® Subject Assessments — tests that measure general and subject-specific content knowledge that you need for beginning teaching
