Carson Wall; Northwood High School All students were previously named semifinalists in fall 2022. All winners of Merit Scholarship awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments—without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC to evaluate: The Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curriculum and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay.

While we salute all our teachers who have answered their calling in the classroom, we recognize that nearly 70% of K-12 educators across the U.S. are women. Each year, 100 musically gifted students across Louisiana are selected to participate in statewide music concerts. This group of CMHS students were selected to perform at the 2021-2022 All State Orchestra led by the Louisiana Music Educators Association. Southwood Senior DeMarcell Frierson has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Gates Scholarship, which supports Pell-Grant eligible underrepresented minorities in their pursuit of a college education. Every year, tens of thousands of applicants across the nation compete for this award, with less than 3% making it to the Finalist round. DeMarcell has been a standout student on his campus. He has been Student Council President, crowned Homecoming King and was a Student of the Year finalist. He was one of two Southwood students who completed a fall internship at LSU Health Shreveport, where he ran statistical analysis to uncover genes that affect cancer progressions in cells. DeMarcell has accomplished all this despite working up to 30 hours a week and helping support his family. We wish DeMarcell good luck and great success!

Our student host Baylie Webb from Turner Elementary recognizes some perfect ACT students, what our schools have done to help Hurricane Ida evacuees and an amazing cadet who won a prestigious award in JROTC. #WeAreCaddo
